Toni Pena, a parent and Halloween fan, always feels safe from predators during Halloween, although her plastic sword might give others a different impression.
Pena plans to dress up as a pirate and trick-or-treat in her neighborhood today along with her family. Tara, her 11-year-old daughter, plans on being a Renaissance girl. The Penas plan to visit neighbors near their Quebec Drive home to get treats.
"We know most of our neighbors, stick to our neighborhood and inspect all the candy when we get home," Pena said. "We're still out there after dark but we're very careful."
Thousands of families will head to known and unknown homes tonight hoping to give children a memorable Halloween, but not all of them are as carefree as the Penas.
"There are several sex-offender signs in the neighborhood, and I worry for Eric," Shandy said, referring to her 10-year-old son. "This is the time of year when freaks come out, and one can't be too sure. I'm always aware of my surroundings and make sure to inspect the candy as soon as I get home."
To try to make Halloween safer, the Corpus Christi Police Department has instituted new regulations for sex offenders that mandate a 6 p.m. curfew tonight and prohibit them from putting out Halloween decorations.
