MADISON, Wis. -- Well, it wasn't a completely wasted weekend for the Seawolves. The weathe... UAA Hockey: Positives are few aft
UAA, which fell to 2-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, has managed just five goals in the last five games. It will not shock you to learn that scoring one goal per game won't get it done in any league on the planet.
At least the Seawolves weren't as lackluster Saturday as they were Friday. There was no reason to register a complaint about their effort Saturday. Execution was another story.
The Badgers (4-1-1, 3-0-1 WCHA), who haven't surrendered more than two goals in a game this season, tacked on three third-period goals. Wisconsin isn't a particularly dynamic team, just very, very solid.
Lawson, who was playing after missing three games with a groin injury, was magnificent through two periods. But you know the drill: The Seawolves didn't give him much help or much scoring support.
"We've got the best tandem in the league, bar none,'' UAA winger Justin Bourne said of Lawson and DeCaro. "Both of those guys saw more than 40 shots and both gave up five goals. But they both kicked out 15 shoulda-beens.
UAA sophomore wing Merit Waldrop, promoted to the first line with center Charlie Kronschnabel and Bourne, scored the Seawolves' lone goal on a second-period rocket he snapped from the right face-off dot. And he led the Seawolves with four shots on goal.
Other than that, UAA's offense was pitiful. The Seawolves managed just two shots on goal in the course of seven power plays that covered nearly 10 minutes. Bourne said he and Kronschnabel, who get considerable power-play duties, share the blame for the team's offensive funk. They didn't score a goal on the weekend, and both players were minus 5 in the series.
And failure to play up to your potential carries repercussions. Shyiak on Saturday made healthy scratches of sophomore forwards Shea Hamilton (two assists in five games) and Eric Walsky (zero points in five games) for the first time in their college careers.
The Seawolves have traveled this road so often they know it by heart. UAA has endured 12 straight losing seasons since joining the WCHA. And nothing UAA did opening its league schedule here suggested anything other than a 13th-straight losing season looms.
