In a statement he said: "It is almost a week since this horrendous incident and while we have had a good response to our appeals for information so far, I would still like anyone who has not spoken to us to come forward with information however insignificant it may seem to them.

"I would ask the people in the Willington Quay area to think back to last Tuesday evening. Did they see anyone hanging around, acting suspiciously on what was a very cold evening?

"I would also like to report that we are determined to bring this investigation to a satisfactory conclusion, so I would like to say to the individual who did this: 'Search your conscience, get it off your chest, come forward before we find you'."
