- Surprisingly insightful, as buddy comedies go, with a good heart and a lovable hero. Steve Carell stars as Andy Stitzer, whose buddies (Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen) discover he's a virgin and determine to end his drought, while meanwhile he's shyly in love with an eBay expert (Catherine Keener). Could have been a crude sex comedy, but isn't; Keener's performance is crucial in establishing the hero not as a challenge, but as an opportunity. Rating: *** 1/2 .
- Billy Bob Thornton as a drunken has-been minor league pitcher who coaches a Little League team made up of losers, strictly for the paycheck. Richard Linklater's remake of the 1976 film starring Walter Matthau is fairly parallel to the original, if darker and more dour. The rough language pushes the limits of the PG-13 rating. Rating: ***.
- Two movies for the price of one. In the first half, Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson are among the citizens of a sealed world, told they are being kept safe from a polluted planet. In the second half, their characters are chased while learning the reality of their situation. Both halves, work but do they work together? The halves seemed a little too much like surf 'n turf. With Steve Buscemi. Rating: ***.
- A good- hearted movie starring Bow Wow (formerly "L'il") and Chi McBride as a son and father both trying to deal with the loss of their mother and wife. Bow Wow hangs out with friends at the roller rink, and they get into a big skating competition. Two big ending scenes: the $500 Skate Off, and the moment of truth between father and son, in a movie that's warmhearted, fun, and wonderfully lacking in the usual negative black lifestyle clichés. Rating: ***.
